Balloon Psychology

An ego is a balloon:

If it is minimized (deflated), it lies passively in a heap, allowing itself to be defined by others.

If it is its intended size (properly inflated), it is relaxed, flexible, attractive, fulfilling its purpose.

If it is large (overly inflated), it is a big vulnerable target, rigid and easily punctured, and thus always on the defensive.
